Hypothyroidism ICD 10 CM Coding Guide for coders

Hypothyroidism ICD 10 CM coding Information

The deficiency of thyroid activity, characterized by decrease in basal metabolic rate, fatigue, and lethargy, if left untreated, it may lead to Hypothyroidism  or myxedema. ICD-Code E03.9 is a billable ICD-10 code used for healthcare diagnosis reimbursement of Hypothyroidism, Unspecified.

Subclinical hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body does not produce enough thyroid hormones and is an early, mild form of hypothyroidism. The condition is considered “subclinical” because while the serum level of the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is slightly elevated, the thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) produced by the thyroid gland are within normal range. Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism may later develop overt hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism ICD 10 may be:

Primary: Caused by disease in the thyroid
Secondary: Caused by disease in the hypothalamus or pituitary

Hypothyroidism, ablative, following total thyroidectomy performed three years ago : E89.0

The corresponding ICD-9 code for Hypothyroidism is 244.9

When a disease of the thyroid is suspected, a thyroid panel may be performed . If the result of the panel is abnormal, the determination of TSH is often helpful in determining the significance of the abnormality. (Alternatively, some physicians feel TSH is the best single “screening” test as it identifies both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism).

A patient examined for vertigo is referred to the clinical laboratory for blood work to rule out hypothyroidism. Code R42, Dizziness and giddiness, is assigned as the reason for the visit. A code for hypothyroidism is not assigned because hypothyroidism is not an established diagnosis. Code Z01.89, Encounter for other specified special examination, is not assigned.

Type/Stages of Hypothyroidism ICD 10 CM

The early stage of hypothyroidism is called subclinical iodine-deficiency hypothyroidism (E02) in ICD-10-CM.

Hypothyroidism can be congenital and can develop in that situation into cretinism. This can result in mental retardation, short stature, puffy face and hands, and neurological deficits. Congenital hypothyroidism is diagnosed clinically based on a newborn screening.

Hypothyroidism can also be classified as post-infectious, due to medication, from atrophy of the thyroid, or it can be idiopathic. A severe stage of hypothyroidism can result in myxedema coma.

Basic ICD-10 INFORMATION

World Health Organization (WHO) authorized the publication of the International Classification of DiseasesExternal 10th Revision (ICD-10), which was implemented for mortality coding and classification from death certificates in the U.S. in 1999. The U.S. developed a Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for medical diagnoses based on WHO’s ICD-10.  This medical classification list is generated by the World Health Organization (WHO), and is used to help healthcare providers identify and code health conditions.

ICD-10 is required for use by physicians and healthcare providers under the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) and will replace all ICD-9 code sets. There are nearly 5 times as many diagnosis codes in ICD-10-CM than in ICD-9-CM.ICD-10 has alphanumeric categories instead of numeric ones. |Hypothyroidism ICD 10
