New 2023 ICD 10 codes for Cardiovascular conditons

There has been lot of new ICD 10 codes added for 2023 related to cardiovascular conditions like Angina pectoris, arteriosclerosis, pericardial effusion, aortic dissection etc. These code are ready to use for 2023. Below are list of the ICD 10 of for these conditions.

New code for refractory angina pectoris

Angina pectoris (category I20) is an early manifestation of ischemic heart disease; however, in rare instances, it occurs as a result of congenital abnormalities of the coronary arteries or such conditions as aortic stenosis, valvular insufficiency, aortic syphilis, or Raynaud’s phenomenon. It is characterized by chest pain (usually perceived by the patient as a sensation of tightness, squeezing, pressing, choking, or burning), heartburn or gas, or an ill-defined discomfort. The pain is similar to that of unstable angina, but it is less severe, more easily controlled, and usually relieved in a predictable manner by either rest or the administration of nitroglycerin.

• I20.2 – Refractory angina pectoris

New codes for atherosclerotic heart disease

• I25.112 – Atherosclerotic heart disease of native coronary artery with refractory angina pectoris
• I25.702 – Atherosclerosis of coronary bypass graft(s), unspecified with refractory angina pectoris
• I25.712 – Atherosclerosis of autologous vein coronary bypass graft(s) with refractory angina
pectoris
• I25.722 – Atherosclerosis of autologous artery coronary bypass graft(s) with refractory angina
• I25.732– Atherosclerosis of non-autologous biological coronary bypass graft(s) with refractory
angina pectoris
• I25.752 – Atherosclerosis of native coronary artery of transplanted heart with refractory angina
pectoris
• I25.762– Atherosclerosis of bypass graft of transplanted heart with refractory angina pectoris
• I25.792 – Atherosclerosis of other coronary artery bypass graft(s) with refractory angina pectoris

New codes for pericardial effusion

• I31.31 – Malignant pericardial effusion in diseases classified elsewhere
• I31.39 – Other pericardial effusion (noninflammatory)
• I34.81 – Nonrheumatic mitral (valve) annulus calcification
• I34.89 – Other nonrheumatic mitral valve disorders

Pericardial effusion is the buildup of too much fluid in the double-layered, saclike structure around the heart (pericardium).  The space between these layers typically contains a thin layer of fluid. But if the pericardium is diseased or injured, the resulting inflammation can lead to excess fluid. Fluid can also build up around the heart without inflammation, such as from bleeding, related to a cancer or after chest trauma.

New codes for ventricular tachycardia

• I47.20 – Ventricular tachycardia, unspecified
• I47.21 – Torsades de pointes
• I47.29 – Other ventricular tachycardia

New codes aortic dissection

• I71.010 – Dissection of ascending aorta
• I71.011 – Dissection of aortic arch
• I71.012 – Dissection of descending thoracic aorta
• I72.019 – Dissection of thoracic aorta, unspecified
An aortic dissection is a serious condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body’s main artery (aorta). Blood rushes through the tear, causing the inner and middle layers of the aorta to split (dissect). If the blood goes through the outside aortic wall, aortic dissection is often deadly.

New codes for cardiac aneurysms

• I71.10 – Thoracic arch aneurysm, ruptured, unspecified
• I71.11 – Aneurysm of the ascending aorta, ruptured
• I71.12 – Aneurysm of the aortic arch, ruptured
• I71.13 – Aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta, ruptured
• I71.20 – Thoracic arch aneurysm, without rupture, unspecified
• I71.21 – Aneurysm of the ascending aorta, without rupture
• I71.22 – Aneurysm of the aortic arch, without rupture
• I71.23 – Aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta, without rupture
• I71.30 – Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), ruptured, unspecified
• I71.31 – Pararenal AAA, ruptured
• I71.32 – Juxtarenal AAA, ruptured

I71.33 – Infrarenal AAA, ruptured
• I71.40 – Abdominal aortic aneurysm, without rupture, unspecified
• I71.41 – Pararenal AAA, without rupture
• I71.42 – Juxtarenal AAA, without rupture
• I71.43 – Infrarenal AAA, without rupture
• I71.50 – Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm, ruptured unspecified
• I71.51 – Supraceliac aneurysm of the abdominal aorta, ruptured
• I71.52 – Paravisceral aneurysm of the abdominal aorta, ruptured
• I71.60 — Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm, without rupture, unspecified
• I71.61 – Supraceliac aneurysm of the abdominal aorta, without rupture
• I71.62 – Paravisceral aneurysm of the abdominal aorta, without rupture
• I77.82 – Antineutrophilic cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) vasculitis
