Coding Guide for orchiopexy cpt code

In Medical coding, the more you code the more you clear your doubts. Experience really matters in medical coding. Being a surgery coder, I have come across many procedures which were little complicated first, but with time and knowledge I gained confidence in coding those procedures. Today, again we will see about coding orchiopexy cpt code which has created lot of confusion among medical coders.

Description of orchiopexy cpt code

54640  Orchiopexy, inguinal approach, with or without hernia repair

Orchiopexy is the surgical fixation of an undescended testicle into the scrotum. An incision is made in the scrotum or the inguinal area from the pubic bone to the upper lateral pelvic area in the skin crease made by the thigh and the lower abdomen. The physician searches for a testis that failed to descend in to the scrotum during development. The tissues are separated by dissection to find the testis in the inguinal canal area. The spermatic cord is mobilized to allow positioning of the testis in the scrotum. In the scrotum, a small pouch is created for the testis where the testis is sutured in place to prevent retraction back in to the inguinal canal. If there is a concomitant hernia it is often repaired at the same time through the same incision. The hernia present in the inguinal canal is repaired by folding and suturing of tissues to strengthen the abdominal wall and correct the weakness responsible for the hernia. The incision is closed in layers by suturing.

For bilateral procedure, coders need to report CPT code 54640 with modifier 50
