Screening Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) CPT code for all payers

Aorta is one of the main organs of abdominal region. It is the main artery from where all the small arteries arise. Arteries arising from the Aorta form Vascular Families. Vascular Families help us in Selective and Non-Selective catheterization coding. Ultrasound Procedure coding is very straight in radiology. We have already learned how to code abdominal ultrasound complete and limited in my previous post. But, in this article we will learn how to code single organ ultrasound separately with different payers. We will learn how to code Screening Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) CPT code in brief in this article

CPT code for abdominal aortic ultrasound for Commercial payers

As we know we use normal numerical codes for commercial payers. Here, also for ultrasound Aorta we are using normal codes only. But, Aorta being a part of abdomen many coders get confuse how to code it. As per the coding guidelines, even Aorta, being major part of abdomen, should be coded as Ultrasound limited of retroperitoneal region (76775). Many coder tend to code Ultrasound Aorta as 76705, considered as a part of Abdominal region. But, we should not follow this and it should always be coded as 76775 .i.e. Ultrasound Retroperitoneal Limited. This code is coded almost all commercial payers except Medicare.

Use CPT G0389 for Medicare

For Medicare patients who are above 65 years of old, have to follow different coding guideline. Here, we are not supposed to code a numerical CPT code. But, we have to code an alphanumeric G code G0389. This code is used uniformly for all the Medicare patients. This is followed across all the location. Coders should always code G0389 as procedure code for ultrasound Aorta for Medicare patients. Coding a normal numerical CPT code 76775, for Medicare patient will not pay for the procedure. Such claims get denied for incorrect coding. Always follow the coding guidelines for proper coding.

  1. […] In Radiology facility, one CPT code can be used for multiple organs or anatomic site. As we know radiology CPT codes falls under 7000 and 9000 series. We have already learnt about CT, MRI, ultrasound CPT codes here. But, still some of medical coders get confused in coding either MRI or ultrasound CPT codes. […]

  3. […] CTA chest or CPT code 93923 etc. but these bone scan codes are little different from the normal ultrasound or CT exams. Let us first check the nuclear medicine bone scan CPT codes description in code […]
